This is an incunabula leaf from the Lieber Chronicarum, better known as the NUREMBERG CHRONICLES. A secular giant from the cradle days of printing it parallels the Gutenberg Bible in craftsmanship and appeal. This leaf from the first Latin edition was printed by Anton Koberger on July 12, 1493 in the German city of Nuremberg. The folio size leaf paper measures 410 x 300 mm and contains several lines of Latin text on both sides. On the right side of the panel are woodcuts of four popes whose papacies ran from 314 to 366: Saint Sylvester, Saint Marcus, Saint Julius, and Pope Liberius. The text contains historical narratives concerning each of these Popes who collectively reigned from 686 to 708. A great 500 yr-old printed history record of a turbulent period in papal history.
